John Catizone is a second generation Italian American whose grandparents came from Calabria, Naples, and Abruzzo. His passion for cooking began at a very early age when he helped his mother make ravioli, lasagna, meatballs, etc. As a young man, John traveled extensively as a jazz pianist. That profession gave John an opportunity to spend three years in Florence. John quickly understood just how regional the Italian culinary repertoire was (and remains so to this day). John returns to Italy to visit his Abruzzese cousins whenever possible.
Although not a trained chef, John has taken numerous cooking classes, including with noted Italian cookbook author Giuliano Hazan. John’s collection of both classic and modern Italian cookbooks is a library in itself.
As a senior citizen, John’s passion for cooking merged with his desire to live a healthy life. He began to study, and follow, the “Mediterranean diet.” The result is this site (and a cookbook coming soon). Far from austere, John’s recipes are small portion, common sense yet delicious, and designed to help one lose weight at a modest, sustainable pace. He shows how one can eat healthier by substituting ingredients, for example, Italian chicken sausage for pork sausage, whole wheat pasta for refined pasta, etc. Many of his recipes are versatile and can be eaten as an appetizer, a salad, or a small meal.
